Solitär is the solo outlet for Mikael Tuominen, known from the Swedish psych bands Kungens Män, Fanatism, Automatism and Eye Make The Horizon. 1989 is the debut album under this moniker. In his own words:

”After playing a lot of droney, improvised, quite loose music for a few years I got the urge to write some songs. I also wanted to see what would come out if I made it all by myself. I always liked eclectic albums and music, so I kind of knew that the end result would be quite schizophrenic. But in the end I guess it came down to songs with a melancholy mood and a lot of ambience, which probably reflects my love of stuff like Tom Waits, Stina Nordenstam, Portishead, The Cure and certain film scores.

Lyrically it’s a brew of free associations, nostalgia, memory and time as something circular or parallell, wordplay, existential meanderings of life and death, and dealing with human self destruction and stupidity. You know, something with a bit of a poetic quality and not necessarily your regular in-your-face rock lyrics.

Hopefully we will have live music again soon and the intention is to make these songs come alive in such a setting as well, together with some friends. But this album was pure ego. The weird thing though, is that however much in control you think you are, the sum of the parts always surprise you!”
